Ethiopia Inaugurates Africa’s Largest Hydroelectric Dam

Ethiopia officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on September 9, 2025, marking a milestone in Africa’s infrastructure development. The $5 billion hydroelectric project, fully funded domestically through bonds and citizen contributions, generates 5,150 MW of electricity, making it Africa’s largest dam.

For businesses, GERD represents more than power—it’s a catalyst for industrial growth, foreign investment, and job creation. Reliable electricity opens opportunities for manufacturing, tech hubs, and energy-intensive industries, positioning Ethiopia as a competitive destination for investors. The project exemplifies how strategic infrastructure, driven by national initiative, can fuel private enterprise for public benefit.
